Concrete typically represents one of the largest sources of embodied carbon in residential construction. This building uses an alternative insulated foundation system designed to significantly reduce that impact.

The foundation walls are constructed using high-density foam panels with integrated steel stud reinforcement. The steel provides structural strength while the foam provides continuous insulation, dramatically reducing the volume of conventional concrete required.
The result is a foundation that performs better thermally than a typical 8–10″ concrete frost wall, with a fraction of the embodied carbon.
