Traditional concrete slabs contain a significant amount of embodied carbon. This project uses a high-performance structural floor instead of a conventional concrete slab.
The floor is constructed using two layers of 3/4″ plywood fastened to an insulated foam-and-steel R-Floor system. The assembly is engineered to support the weight of a typical vehicle while providing exceptional thermal performance.
That removes the need for a high-carbon concrete slab and creates a functional garage and shop space underfoot, without giving up insulation value.
